FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STRATHMORE, Alberta – Tuesday, December 5, 2017

In the week of November 25th, the Strathmore Overnight Shelter reported that the Adopt a Family bin located at Tina’s No Frills had been robbed of its toys. At that the time, all they had was surveillance video showing a man entering the store, walking around a bit then going back and cleaning out the bin.

There were interviews done and articles published in both Strathmore newspapers.

It was later discovered that the bin was not in fact robbed. The man who took the toys is a representative of the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society who went to Tina’s No Frills on Friday, December 1st, 2017 and explained it was his job to pick up the donations that day and that he had mistakenly taken toys from the wrong bin.

Strathmore Overnight Shelter Executive Director Elizabeth Karp has since spoken with Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society representative Craig Stone who said that they would do their best to get the toys returned to the Strathmore Overnight Shelter.

Since the Strathmore Overnight Shelter had already started planning a Toys for Hay rides day to ensure they would be able to honour their commitment to the four families they’d promised Christmas gifts for, they decided to donate the toys to the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society as either way, the toys were going to go to a family in need.

The Strathmore Overnight Shelter is grateful that the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society came forward as it has given them the opportunity to not only understand what happened, but to then allow them to set the story straight with their Facebook followers and the people of Strathmore.
